Who we are
At Academia de Futbolistas, we believe in the power of sport to transform lives. We were founded with the mission to create opportunities for girls and young women in Honduras through the sport of fútbol. Our academy provides a safe, supportive, and high-quality environment for girls and young women to learn, train, and grow through fútbol.
Our story begins with two expats, lifelong football lovers (soccer, for the Americans), living on a small island in the Caribbean.
While there, Sierra reached out to Loren about joining her local women’s fútbol team. Sierra hadn’t played in over nine years following her second knee surgery and wasn’t sure what to expect—but once she stepped back on the pitch, everything clicked. What started as a casual return to the game quickly grew into a deep friendship and a shared commitment to fútbol.
As they tried to prepare their team for a local tournament, they realized something was missing. None of the women—ranging from their 20s to 40s—had ever received formal training. First touches were inconsistent, heads stayed down while dribbling, and most play defaulted to “kickball,” where they just hoofed it back and forth. Everyone loved the game, but no one had been taught how to play it.
That realization sparked a bigger question: why?

Like any good detectives, they started asking around—first to their teammates, then to others in the community. The answer was always the same: there was no program, no funding, and no long-term development for women’s fútbol. The focus had always been on the men’s game.
THAT’S WHEN THE IDEA SPRUNG
As they shared their frustration, they couldn’t help but notice the young girls watching from the sidelines - daughters, nieces, cousins - eager and inspired. That’s when the idea took shape. By leveraging their networks in soccer, work, and beyond, they could turn their love for the game into something bigger: an opportunity to support, train, and empower the next generation of girls who want to play.
And that’s how it all began
